My wife and I escaped the Bakersfield California heat for a couple of days and visited my daughter and grandkids, 2 of 3, in Camarillo. daughter Melissa took us out to a small roadside stand adjacent to the strawberry fields. As they were picking they would bring the boxes of berries up to the stand…..fresh!!!! Literally minutes from the field and the taste….as if they were dipped in sugar. We have never tasted such good berries. Many times growers go fo the biggest and brightest berries but without flavor. These were very good size but the finest flavor…wish mine at home were this good….close but not quite. In the slide show below is a visit to the farmers Market in Camarillo. My wife Kathy did some comparison tasting and the berries from the stand out on N Lewis R. at Las Posas in Camarillo are the best!
I wish that I had brought my good cameras….I had intended to bring my Nikon D200 and the Nikon J1 but forgot…More of that CRS stuff. So – I did the best I could with the iPhone!
Saturday in Camarillo – high of 68 F, high in Bakersfield when we arrived was 108 F! Oh well – it is a dry heat!

My wife and I have been talking about how our own strawberries and those from a local farmer that are just as good as ours have given us back the knowledge of what a good strawberry should taste like.
When we go to a party where someone is serving out of season store bought strawberries in a salad or dessert or side dish, we immediately notice the difference. While everyone else is politely (or genuinely) telling the creator of the dish how wonderful it tastes, we just politely nod along while noting how tasteless and plain their beautiful giant strawberries really are.

I worked at a produce warehouse many years ago and I saw some very interesting strawberries. There was a variety label Z-something – so big that it was difficult to hold two in one hand. Beautiful berries but with an absolute absence of flavor. I have tried to score some of the plants grown in Camarillo but they are patented, sold in lots of 10,000 or more and a contract that forbids propagating! I have considered a 3:00 AM foray into a field under the cover of darkness and liberate a few to take home!!!!! They actually arrest and book strawberry thieves here! Still – tempting

Super fun time with you guys. I’m glad you enjoyed the strawberries. We think they are the best. The half flat I purchased yesterday is already gone. We love our Farmers Market. The people are great and there are usually a few local artisans selling art, pottery and the sort. I’m glad you had a chance to get over there.

I returned yesterday to find about 10 pounds of tomatoes on my kitchen counter, 2 gallons of cherry tomatoes, an assortment of cucumbers and a few peppers. Daughter Lisa did a fine job in my absence. Now, I may need more or a few new friends to share the bounty with or…..make some sauce!
