I am a lucky guy. Both varieties are producing bananas. The smaller bananas now have 3 stalks unfolding. The larger variety has two big bunches. I cut some of the green ones over the weekend and put them in bags with apples to speed up the ripening process. It is amazing how quickly they ripen. Both of my varieties are from Mexico.
The thicker banana is called a” Burro” banana. It is a very creamy textured and sweet banana. It is great in smoothies, adding a lot of thickness to the drink. The smaller is a “Manzano” banana, considered a dessert banana. It does have a hint of apple flavor, hence the “apple” banana translation.
Manazano banana development photos below. Scroll to see captions.
The Burro banana is longer and very plump.
Now I need to get busy and thin the plants out so the fruit will fully mature.
The squirrels have found my tomatoes……….grrrrrrr……… but so far………They have left bananas alone!

I am learning a lot and enjoying the bananas. The young man I sat next to on the plane today was born in Mexico. I showed him the banana pictures and he knew both of the varieties. Described the flavors perfectly. Maybe I will run the myo you in the next few days. I will be in Los Osos tomorrow through Saturday.

Pesky squirrels…they certainly can be a problem for a gardener. There is nothing better than a ripe banana picked straight from the tree. They are way better than the ones sold in our markets.

Thanks Karen. I have a solution for the squirrels but my wife doesn’t like squirrel stew! These bananas have such an amazing flavor. Wish I could ship you a few.

Hello,
Very nice post! Yes those squirrels are a nuisance. First, I hope all is well with you in these difficult times of 2021. Although your post is from 2016, I’m hoping that you still have your Burro banana plants. If so, do you sell any of the samplings or pups from them? I would be very interested in purchasing 2 or 3 plants.

Marie,
I am sorry to say that after a major freeze a couple of years ago I wound up pulling out all of my banana plant. I actually gave away probably 15 corms to a guy who wanted to plant them.

Love it! I know I am late to the show but this is awesome. Please share who you purchased the bananas from, looking to get started on my backyard too! 😉

Well, the bad news is that they weren’t purchased. I was working with a young man whose father grew bananas in Mexico. His father had planted the two varieties near Beaumont, TX. His father was an avid gardener too and whenever his father was working in my area we would talk about growing things …… his English was a little better than my Spanish but we forged a bit of a bond. They were a gift to me……Sorry.
