I stepped out into the garden this afternoon and discovered the surprise. My banana plant has opened up the female flowering portion of the plant, the inflorescence. This variety produced a very nice bunch of at least 40 big bananas last SUMMER! This is February FIRST! I am praying that we don’t have one of those February hard freezes that will wipe out the bananas.
On a side note, my bees have been hauling in pollen big way for over a month! The bees have found the banana nectar. Hope they are my bees.

Thanks. I am very new to banana growing. I love watching the bracts peel back and exposing the next bunches!

I’m with you in hoping you don’t experience a hard freeze! I would just love to experience growing bananas. I’m really impressed with yours. And the bees, as well!

Good heavens, man! What a wonderful surprise. Maybe if it starts getting suspiciously cold you can bundle it up a bit in burlap or something? It’d sure be a pity to get one of those killing freezes after such a glorious start. Cheers! K

I am being proactive. I have wrapped the trunk with the bubble wrap from the packing that came with my new bee hives. I covered the banana stalk with flannel sheets for the recent cold nights. The pollen the bees are bringing is hinting at an early spring. Fingers crossed!

Well, Punxsutawney Phil seems to think it’ll be spring soon, too, so here’s hoping! 😉

I hope he is right. I am wanting to sit my largest beehive soon. I wash able to pull 120 pounds of honey from it so it has good genetics!
